Ever seen a hairstyle you really like but you just know ‘Frank,’ your back street barber, hasn’t a cat in hells chance of pulling it out of the bag?  Has intimidation ever prevented you from entering the shiny salon on the high st…..? If this sounds familiar, don’t despair, you’re really not alone.

Most modern chaps take great pride in their appearance, however the majority still feel slightly out of their depth walking into the local unisex salon for that cult cut. Jacks of London, founded by Sue XXXX, was established to tackle this intimidation head on and make the latest styles available to one and all by offering a masculine environment totally devoid of any discomfort. The Jacks of London policy is quite clear, everyone is welcome. I decided to visit their Guildford store to see how 40 years experience in the industry has lead to their success.

On entering the salon I was immediately greeted by a friendly member of team, my jacket taken care of and a selection of drinks offered, I was invited to relax in the waiting area. Pen and paper at the ready, first note to self, the seats in the waiting area are all facing away from the treatment area so nobody tuning into your conversation or watching you have your ‘bush like’ eye brows trimmed, great idea. 2nd note to self – the beer is free, after my own heart or what!

My turn to take to the seat. Sandra, a female barber takes a couple of minutes to establish exactly what I’m looking for. The criteria confirmed, we’re off! During the cut I took the opportunity the ‘grill’ Sandra about the Jacks concept. The conversation maintains a trend throughout, approachability and convenience.

The cut complete, I’m transferred to the shaving station for a ‘cut throat’ style facial. I refuse to call this a cut throat shave, it deserves much more credit than that, it’s a relaxing treatment. Every man should try it!

Well, after 90 minutes of pampering I’m fully conversant with the Jacks of London ethos. The experience tells a story, I actually found the science behind their concept quite moving. The taboo which accompanies grooming often prevents guys from getting what they really want, not anymore!
